ISLAMABAD: The country’s 50 percent population supported the present government while 49 percent favoured the opposition and 60 percent favoured the National Assembly, according to the findings of a latest survey conducted during August 1-26, by the International Republican Institute (IRI).
The survey by IRI, which works for advancement of democracy worldwide, is a national representative sample of adults from 70 districts in all provinces, excluding FATA and Chitral.
Respondents from different income groups were included in the surveys who were asked questions on key areas, including democracy and elections. About the rating of national institutions, 89% said army, 80% said media, 66% government schools, 63% courts, 61% government hospitals, and 29% favoured police.
Asked how would they rate the performance of the new national PML-N government, 10% respondents rated the performance of PML-N government as “very good”, 48% rated it as good, 22% rated as bad, 11% rated as very bad and 9% did not reply.
To a question if the election for National Assembly were held next week, for which party would you vote? – 33% responded that they would vote for PML-N, 11% PTI, 9% PPP, 2% each MQM, JI and PML-F while 1% each said they would vote for JUI-F, PML-Q and ANP. 25% did not respond to the question.
About the single most issue facing Pakistan? – 42% people responded that electricity is the single most important issue facing Pakistan, 21 % replied inflation, 12% unemployment, 10 % terrorism, 3% each termed law and order, corruption, poverty most important issues.
Only 1% considered gas/petrol as the single most important issue facing Pakistan; 3% said there are other important issues facing the country.
Asked about the timing of holding local government elections, 64% replied that local government elections should be held next year, 17% responded in negative and 19% did not respond.
About rating the performance of the PML-N provincial government in Punjab, 23% rated it “very good”, 50% good, 14% bad, 7% very bad and 6% did not respond.
About the PTI-led coalition government in Khyber Pakhtukhwa, 9% rated it very good, 40% good, 20 bad, 8% very bad and 23% did not respond.
About the PPP government performance in Sindh, 7% termed it very good, 27% good, 27% bad, 21% very bad and 19% did not respond.
About rating the performance of PML-N/NP/PkMAP coalition government in Balochistan, 6% called it very good, 24% good, 24% bad, 12% very bad and 35% did not respond.
Asked about the importance of local government elections, 36 percent responded that these elections provide a solution to local issues, 15% termed it a solution to national issues, 4% thought it a source of change, 3% said it is required for betterment of the country, 1% think that they would help in division of work, 1% considered them as generating employment opportunities, 3% said other reasons and 37% did not respond.
As many as 75% respondents said they voted in general elections, 23% did not vote and 1% did not respond to the question; 19 percent said they were motivated to vote for change, 18% considered it as a national duty, 14% voted for betterment of the country, 7% were motivated by family/friends, 6% were self motivated, 4% voted to bring down inflation, 4% voted for their respective party, 2 percent each voted for curbing load shedding, solving local issues, solving national issues and in favour of generating employment opportunities.
Some 4% were motivated by other reasons and 15% did not respond.
About fairness of general elections, 60% respondents considered them free and fair, 27% did not consider them free and fair while 13% did not respond.
Asked about the main reason for which PML-N won the elections, 19 percent said it won on the basis of performance, 12 percent said on the basis of public expectations, 10% replied good performance in Punjab, 6% replied that development was the basis of the PML-N’s victory, 6% respondents said it won the elections because of rigging and 3% each said that it won due to energy planning and reaction to PPP.
